지리산 자락의 깊은 계곡과 풍부한 자연경관을 품은 전라남도 구례 피아골에 자리한 산운스테이는 자연 속에서의 온전한 휴식을 지향하는 프리미엄 친환경 목조 숙박시설이다. ‘산운(山雲)’이라는 이름은 건축주가 직접 명명한 것으로, ‘산이 가득한 곳, 구름이 가득한 곳, 그리고 자연이 가득한 곳’이라는 의미를 담고 있다. 이는 단순한 브랜드 네이밍을 넘어 대상지가 지닌 장소성과 건축이 추구하는 가치, 그리고 방문객이 경험하게 될 공간의 정체성을 함축적으로 표현한다

프로젝트는 자연을 훼손하지 않고 자연과 공존하는 건축을 구현하는 데 중점을 두었다. 특히 지리산 자락의 경사지형과 기존 식생을 최대한 보존하기 위해 OSC(Off-Site Construction) 기반의 프리패브 목조건축 방식을 적용하였다. 주요 건축 요소를 공장에서 정밀하게 제작한 후 현장에서 최소한의 조립만으로 완성하는 방식은 시공 과정에서 발생하는 소음과 분진, 건설 폐기물을 줄이고 주변 생태계에 미치는 영향을 최소화하였다. 동시에 균질한 품질관리와 높은 시공 완성도를 확보함으로써 지속가능한 건축의 새로운 가능성을 제시하였다.

배치계획은 대지의 원형을 존중하는 것에서 출발했다. 각각의 독립된 캐빈은 경사지의 흐름에 순응하도록 배치되었으며, 동과 동 사이에는 충분한 여백과 외부 데크 공간을 마련하여 자연환경이 건축 사이를 흐를 수 있도록 계획하였다. 이를 통해 각 객실은 주변 경관을 독립적으로 향유하면서도 피아골의 산세와 계곡, 하늘과 구름의 풍경을 온전히 담아내는 프라이빗한 휴식 공간으로 기능한다.

건축의 형태와 재료는 절제된 미니멀리즘을 바탕으로 한다. 단순한 매스와 검정 및 백색 계열의 외장 마감은 자연보다 앞서 드러나는 건축을 지양하고, 주변 풍경을 더욱 돋보이게 하는 배경으로서의 건축을 의도하였다. 실내 역시 자연광과 환기를 고려한 창호계획, 따뜻한 목재의 질감, 간결한 디테일을 통해 사용자가 공간 속에서 빛과 바람, 계절의 변화와 자연의 리듬을 오롯이 체감할 수 있도록 구성하였다.

산운스테이는 단순한 숙박시설이 아닌 자연과 건축, 사람의 관계를 다시 생각하게 하는 공간이다. 목재라는 친환경 재료와 OSC 공법, 지형을 존중한 배치, 그리고 비움의 미학이 결합된 이 프로젝트는 자연을 보존하면서도 풍요로운 공간 경험을 제공할 수 있는 목조건축의 가능성을 보여주는 사례라 할 수 있다. 건축이 자연을 점유하는 대상이 아니라 자연 속에 조화롭게 스며드는 존재가 될 수 있음을 보여주는 산운스테이는 지속가능한 미래 건축의 방향을 제안하고 있다.

Located in Piagol, Gurye, Jeollanam-do, at the foot of Jirisan Mountain, SANUN STAY is a premium eco-friendly timber accommodation designed for a complete retreat in nature. The name “Sanun(山雲)” was given by the client, meaning “a place filled with mountains, clouds, and nature.” More than a simple brand name, it reflects the character of the site, the values pursued by the architecture, and the spatial identity that visitors will experience.

The project focuses on creating architecture that coexists with nature rather than disturbing it. To preserve the sloped terrain and existing vegetation of the Jirisan foothills as much as possible, an OSC(Off-Site Construction) based prefabricated timber construction method was applied. Major building components were precisely manufactured in a factory and assembled on site with minimal work. This process reduced noise, dust, and construction waste during construction, while minimizing the impact on the surrounding ecosystem. At the same time, it ensured consistent quality control and a high level of construction precision, suggesting a new possibility for sustainable architecture.

The site plan began with respect for the original form of the land. Each independent cabin was placed to follow the natural flow of the slope. Sufficient open spaces and outdoor decks were arranged between the cabins, allowing nature to pass through the architecture. Through this arrangement, each room becomes a private place of rest, offering its own view while fully embracing the mountains, valley, sky, and clouds of Piagol.

The form and material expression of the architecture are based on restrained minimalism. The simple masses and black-and-white exterior finishes prevent the buildings from standing out before nature. Instead, the architecture is intended to serve as a quiet background that allows the surrounding landscape to become more vivid. Inside, the window design considers natural light and ventilation, while the warm texture of timber and simple details allow usersexperience light, wind, seasonal changes, and the rhythm of nature within the space. 

SANUN STAY is not merely a place to stay. It is a space that invites us to reconsiderrelationship between nature, architecture, and people. Through eco-friendly timber, OSC construction, a layout that respects the terrain, and the aesthetics of emptiness, this project demonstrates the potential of timber architecture to preserve nature while offering a rich spatial experience. SANUN STAY shows that architecture does not have to occupy nature, but can quietly blend into it, proposing one possible direction for sustainable architecture in the future.
