파빌리온 ‘하얀그늘’은 사용되지 않던 캠퍼스 외부계단을 다시 머물 수 있는 공간으로 전환하기 위한 소규모 개입이다.
본관동 신축 이후 조성된 대형 계단은 서향의 강한 일사와 과도한 시선 개방으로 인해 벤치 기능을 상실한 채 통과 공간으로만 작동하고 있었으며, 우천 시 마당의 빗물이 집중 유입되며 구조적 노후화도 진행되고 있었다.
설계는 기존 계단을 철거하기보다 배수 트렌치를 통해 우수 흐름을 재정비하고, 기존 벤치 계단의 사선 골조를 존치한 채 이를 감싸는 파빌리온 구조를 추가하는 방식으로 접근하였다. 세로 루버는 일사를 조절하고 시각적 안정감을 부여하며, 낮에는 밝은 그늘을, 밤에는 캠퍼스의 풍경을 형성한다.
대학본부 방향에서 바라볼 때 보이는 파빌리온의 배면은 시작 높이와 규모를 동일하게 설정하였다. 이는 같은 출발점을 지닌 동문들의 시작을 의미한다. 이후 깊이 방향으로 변화하는 구조는 졸업 이후 각자의 삶이 서로 다른 깊이와 크기로 확장되는 과정을 은유한다.
서로 다른 형태들이 하나의 구조로 조화를 이루듯, ‘하얀그늘’은 선배들의 시간 위에 후배들이 머물며 쉼과 미래를 상상할 수 있는 캠퍼스의 공공 공간을 제안한다.

The pavilion White Shade is a small intervention that transforms an unused exterior campus stair into a place where people can pause and stay.
The large stair, built after the construction of the main building, had lost its function as a bench. Strong west-facing sunlight and an overly exposed line of sight made it work only as a passage. During rainy weather, runoff from the yard concentrated into the stair area, accelerating structural aging.
Rather than demolishing the existing stair, the design reorganizes stormwater flow through a drainage trench, keeps the diagonal structural frame of the bench-stair, and adds a pavilion structure that wraps around it. Vertical louvers control sunlight and provide visual calm—creating a bright shade in the daytime and a new nighttime scene for the campus.
Seen from the university headquarters, the rear face of the pavilion begins with the same height and scale. This represents alumni who started from the same point. As the structure changes in depth, it becomes a metaphor for how each life expands after graduation in different depths and dimensions.
Just as different forms come together as one harmonious structure, White Shade proposes a public campus space where juniors can rest on the time built by seniors—and imagine their future.
