10년의 시간을 잇는 건축적 연속성
2013년 공주시 추계리 금계산 자락에 뿌리를 내린 ‘향약원’은 10년이라는 시간을 지나, ‘향약원 별관’이라는 새로운 확장을 마주했다. 프로젝트의 핵심 과제는 단순한 면적의 확충을 넘어, 기존 ‘향약원’과 긴밀한 연계성을 유지하면서도, 직원 워크숍과 가족중심의 여가공간을 수용할 수 있는 다기능적 공간을 구축하는 것이었다. 이를 위해서, 기존 ‘향약원’과 ‘향약원 별관’이 하나의 단지로 기능할 수 있는 설계안을 제안했다.

지형의 재해석
대지의 경사지형은 설계의 가장 큰 제약인 동시에 영감의 원천이었다. 복지시설 3개 동과 부대시설 1개 동이라는 프로그램을 대지에 안착시키기 위해, 지형을 적극적으로 활용한 ‘단면적 해결’을 시도했다. 경사지형을 적극적으로 활용하여, 복지시설의 1개 층과 부대시설을 지하화함으로써, 지상 층수를 3층으로 낮추었다. 이는 산지와 농지로 이루어진, 주변환경에 대한 시각적 위압감을 해소하였다. 동시에 건폐율의 한계를 극복하고, 동간 이격거리를 충분히 확보하여, 쾌적한 외부 공간을 창출하는 결과로 이어졌다. 특히, 지하화 된 부대시설(D동)의 상부는 진입광장과 외부 휴게공간이 되어, 단지 내 보행 흐름을 유기적으로 순환시키는 역할을 수행한다.

자연으로의 열린 시선
각 주동의 저층부에는 외부 공간과 연계가 용이한 다목적 거실을 배치하여, 내외부 공간의 소통이 원활하도록 하였다. 상층부에는 프라이버시를 고려한 객실을 두어, 이용자가 휴식에 집중할 수 있도록 하였다. 모든 주동은 지형의 등고를 따라 엇갈리게 배치하여, 상호 간의 조망 간섭을 최소화했다. 이는 모든 실에서 금계산의 자연을 온전히 마주하게 하려는 의도였다.

 

풍경에 스며드는 백색 매스
외관 디자인은 기존 ‘향약원’의 정체성을 계승하는 동시에, 주변 자연과의 조화를 이루도록 했다. 저층부는 대지의 물성을 닮은 재료를 사용하여, 자연 속으로 스며들도록 하였다. 상층부는 기존 ‘향약원’과 조화를 고려하여, 백색의 순수한 매스로 계획하였으며, 시각적 통일감을 부여했다.
단순한 ‘형태미’ 속에서 지형의 변화에 따라, 시시각각 변하는 그림자와 백색 매스의 중첩은 단조로움을 탈피하고, 풍부한 건축적 표정을 완성하였다.

Architectural Continuity Across a Decade
Established in 2013 at the foothills of Mt. Geumgye in Chugye-ri, Gongju, Hyangyakwon has reached a new phase after ten years with the addition of the Hyangyakwon Annex. The key challenge of this project was not simply to increase floor area, but to create a multifunctional space that could support staff workshops and family-oriented leisure activities, while maintaining a strong connection with the existing Hyangyakwon. To achieve this, we proposed a design in which the original building and the annex function together as a single integrated complex.

 

Reinterpreting the Topography
The sloped terrain of the site was both the greatest constraint and the primary source of inspiration for the design. To accommodate three welfare buildings and one auxiliary facility, we adopted a sectional strategy that actively engaged the topography. By partially embedding one floor of the welfare buildings and the auxiliary facility into the slope, the visible height was limited to three stories above ground. This approach reduced the visual impact on the surrounding landscape of mountains and farmland.
At the same time, it allowed us to overcome site coverage limitations and secure sufficient distances between buildings, resulting in generous and comfortable outdoor spaces. In particular, the roof of the sunken auxiliary building (Building D) was designed as an entrance plaza and outdoor resting area, playing a key role in creating a continuous and fluid pedestrian circulation within the complex.

 

Open Views Toward Nature
On the lower levels of each building, multipurpose living spaces were placed to allow easy connection with outdoor areas, encouraging active interaction between interior and exterior spaces. Guest rooms were arranged on the upper levels, with privacy carefully considered so that users could focus on rest and relaxation.
All buildings were staggered along the site’s contours to minimize visual interference between them. This arrangement was intended to ensure that every room could fully engage with the natural scenery of Mt. Geumgye.

White Masses Blending into the Landscape
The exterior design inherits the identity of the existing Hyangyakwon while harmonizing with the surrounding natural environment. At the lower levels, materials that echo the texture of the site were used, allowing the buildings to visually merge with the landscape. The upper levels were planned as pure white masses, in dialogue with the original Hyangyakwon, creating a sense of visual unity across the complex.
Within this simple formal language, the overlapping of white volumes and the constantly shifting shadows created by the changing terrain prevent monotony and give the architecture a rich and nuanced expression.
