“여름방학이면 놀러간 할머님 댁의 대청마루가 없었다면 우리는 국문과에 가 지 않았을 거에요. 장마철 높은 습도에 세상 모든 게 눅눅해져 책을 보려 엎드 리면 살이 쩍쩍 달라붙던 대청마루에 대해 재미있게도 우린 같은 기억을 가지 고 있습니다.”

설계초기단계에서 건축주 부부가 풀어놓은 이야기다. 같은 학교 국문과 동기 인 부부는 아파트에 더 이상 살 수 없다며 바람 잘 통하고, 햇볕 잘 드는 그리 고 마당 있는 단독주택에 살겠다고 찾아왔고, 그들의 꿈 중 하나는 본인들이 사는 동네에 작은 도서관을 운영하는 것이라 했다.

신축과 리모델링을 모두 염두해 여러 곳의 땅과 집을 함께 보러 다녔고, 건축 주 부부에게 제격인 땅이 나타나 1년여간의 설계가 진행됐다.

살림집으로서의 역할에 충실하도록 햇볕 잘 들고 바람 잘 통하는 향으로 집을 앉히고, 마당을 최대한 확보하고 자동차는 집 밖으로 내보냈다. 그들의 바람대로 아파트처럼 커다란 거실보다는 여러 사람들이 머무르며 차 마시고 책 보고 대화할 수 있는 공간을 마련했고, 그들 삶의 일부인 책을 수납 할 수 있도록 곳곳에 책장을 디자인했다.

집을 길게 늘어뜨린 배치와 건축물 전체의 50% 가까이 되는 반 외부의 지붕 아래 공간들이 주변의 자연을 집으로 끌어들이고 실내를 외부로 확장해 풍부 한 공간을 만들어 낸다. 채광과 환기도 유리해지고, 그것이 이 집을 구성하는 가장 큰 장점이라 하겠다. 

1년 8개월간의 여정이 끝나갈 무렵 건축주 부부의 책들이 먼저 입주하기 시작 했고, 이 집을 방문한 첫 손님은 글짓기를 하는 건축주의 중학생 제자들이 됐다. 서향각(書香閣)이라는 이름에 배어있듯 이 집의 팔자가 아닐까.

"We couldn’t have went to the Korean Language Department without the floor of my grandmother’s house I visited every summer vacation. We have the same fun memories of the floor where our shirts clung to the body when lying face down to read a book when everything in this world was damp in rainy season and high humidity.”

It is the client couple’s story they told at the beginning of the design. The couple, who went to the same school’s Korean Language Department, visited us with the desire to live in a wellventilated, sunny detached house with a yard, saying that they cannot live in an apartment any more and one of their dreams is to run a small library in their neighborhood.

We went to see various lands and houses including both new construction and remodeling together with the couple, and found the land suitable for the client couple so one-year design was processed. The house was designed to be located in a sunny, airy direction, having a yard as much as possible and driving a car out of the house so that it can fulfill its role as a private home.

As they wish, we made a space where many people could stay, drink tea, talk, read rather than a large living room like an apartment, and designed bookshelves everywhere to accommodate books that are part of their lives.

The layout of spreading out the house lengthways and the spaces under the semi-outdoor roof, which are close to 50% of the entire building, attract the surrounding nature to the house and expand the interior to create ample space. Sunshine and ventilation is also advantageous, which is the greatest advantage of this house.

Towards the end of one year and eight month journey, the client couple started to move in first, and the first visitors to the house were their middle school students who wrote an essay.

We wonder if it is the face of this house like the name of Seohyangak.
