‘피어라’는 숲속에 있는 작은 빵집이다. 충남 당진에 한적하고 조금은 삭막한 국도에서 하천을 가로지르는 다리를 건너면 누운 듯 낮게 펼쳐지는 작은 산이 있다. 그리고 그 안으로 조금 들어가면 숲이 시작된다. 작은 빵집은 청보리밭이 곱게 깔아놓은 잔디처럼 구릉을 가득 메운 넓은 언덕 옆으로 난 작은 오솔길에 낮게 앉아 있다. 
작은 빵집이라고 부를 때 기분이 참 좋다. ‘빵집’이라는 이름이 주는 푸근함 때문이라고 생각하는데, 빵을 구울 때 나는 냄새가 저절로 머리에 떠오른다. 직접 코로 맡는 냄새가 아니라 머리에 떠오르는 것은 참 특이하다. 그리고 그 빵의 냄새는 이 빵집을 지은 가족의 분위기처럼 따뜻하다.
한 가족이 따로 연고도 없는 산과 들과 언덕이 갖춰진 땅으로 십여 년 전에 들어왔다. 한국 음식을 연구하고 저술하는 어머니는 가족과 함께 식당을 운영하며, 나무와 청보리를 심고 ‘바람의 언덕’을 가꾸며 살았다. 그 집 둘째 딸은 어릴 때 친척집에 놀러 갔다가, 자신은 이곳에서 공부하겠노라 통보하고 눌러앉았는데 그 곳이 미국이었다고 한다. 그 딸이 요리 공부를 마치고 돌아와서, 부모님 곁에서 빵집을 하나 열기로 했다. 
그리고 우리에게 설계를 맡겼는데, 20대의 클라이언트는 그동안 만난 중에서도 최연소의 나이였다. 처음에는 그녀의 부모님의 식당 앞 너른 터에 설계를 해서 허가를 신청했다. 그런데 당진시청에서 우리가 설계한 땅이 하천법에 지정하는 선에 걸려 있어 지을 수 없다는 청천벽력 같은 통보를 했다. 건축법이 아닌 하천법이 튀어나와 일을 방해한 것은 처음 겪는 일이었다. 
그래서 우리는 한숨 한번 길게 쉬고 다시 빵집을 지을 자리를 정해서 설계를 다시 시작했다. 이미 완성한 설계도면이 있었지만 땅이 달라졌으니 할 수 없는 일이었다. 이 가족의 땅은 입구는 좁고 안으로 점점 넓어지는 자루처럼 생겼다. 넓은 땅에서 어디에 지을 것인가 한참 생각했다. 우리는 늘 한정된 대지에서 그 모양과 주변을 의식하며 어렵게 설계하는 일에 익숙해져 있었다. 아주 넓은 땅에서 작은 집을 지을 자리를 찾는 일은 별로 겪어보지 못한 새로운 경험이었다. 
이번에는 하천과 멀리 떨어진 곳으로 정하기로 하고, 클라이언트와 함께 땅을 돌아다녔다. 다리를 건너서 땅으로 들어오는 입구에 있는 가로로 긴 땅, 그리고 바람의 언덕이라고 부르는 대지의 서쪽에 있는 고즈넉한 언덕 등을 비교해 보았다. 결국 청보리밭과 숲이 만나는, 오솔길이 시작되는 곳에 짓기로 했다. 
그곳에는 물이 흐르는 길이 있었고 나무와 풀들이 많이 있었다. 우리는 가급적 기존의 자연을 건드리지 않기 위해 노력했다. 나무를 피하고 물길을 피해서 몸을 이리저리 비틀며 설계를 했다. 땅의 남쪽과 북쪽, 서쪽에 있는 나무 사이에 건물을 집어넣다 보니, 집의 형태는 꺾쇠처럼 꺾어지며 앉게 되었고, 원래 있던 나무들이 수문장처럼 버티고 서있게 되었다. 그리고 건물의 전면을 따라 날개처럼 튀어나온 테라스를 캐노피로 덮고 양쪽 끝에서 수직으로 다시 내렸다. 그 벽에는 시간에 따라 달라지는 빛의 그림자를 건물에 드리울 수 있도록 길게 틈을 내었다. 
그게 전부였다. 어찌 보면 소극적이고 땅에 모든 것을 맡기는 설계였다. 그리 넓지 않은 카페의 내부는 빵을 굽는 공간이 주로 차지해서 테이블이 몇 개 없다. 손님들은 대부분 바구니에 커피와 빵을 담아 숲이나 청보리밭이 보이는 언덕으로 피크닉을 나갈 것이다. 
공사는 봄부터 여름까지, 유난히 좋은 날씨 덕분에 아주 순조롭게 진행되었다. 카페 이름 ‘피어라’는 오래도록 이 땅을 함께 가꾼 가족 덕에 사계절 늘 꽃이 피는 언덕의 모습을 상징하는 아름다운 단어이다. 
빵집의 외관은 소박한 벽돌로 마감해서 마치 숲속에 원래 있던 집 같기도 하다. 우리는 땅에서 살짝 들어올려진 빵집의 형태가, 마치 숲에서 나와서 숲으로 들어가는 듯한 느낌을 주기를 바랐다. 겨울에서 봄까지는 청보리밭이, 여름에는 남쪽으로 펼쳐진 옥수수밭이 이곳으로 사람들을 불러 모을 것이고, 빵집은 그 배경이 되어줄 것이다. 
그리고 이 가족이 굽고 빚어 만들어내는 빵의 냄새가 사람들의 일상에도, 한겨울에도 푸르름을 유지하는 청보리밭에도 한결같이 온기를 전해줄 것이다.

‘Piora’ is a small bakery, located in the woods at Dangjin, South ChungcheongProvince. There is a small mountain lying low when you cross a bridge across a stream on a quiet, slightly stark road, from where one walks a bit and the forest starts. The small bakery sits low on a small trail next to a broad hills, full of green barley field laid out like a beautiful lawn.
A dozen years ago, the family, without any links, moved to the land among the mountains, fields, and hills. The family's land looks like a sack with a narrow entrance and gradually widens inside. We pondered where we should locate the building onto this peculiar shape of land. 
On the designated spot, there were many trees, grass and a path through which water flowed. We tried not to touch the existing natural conditions as less as possible. The final design twisted the building, avoiding trees and waterways. The building was placed between the trees in the south and north and west of the earth, and the design folded like a curve, with the original trees standing like guards in front. Then the winged terrace along the front of the building was covered with canopy and lowered again at both ends. The wall with long break allows shadow of light to be cast that changes with time.That was all. In a way, the design was passive and left everything to the will of the ground. Theinterior of the not-so-wide cafe is mainly occupied by baking space, so there are just few tables inside. Guests will mostly go on a picnic to a hill overlooking a forest or green barley field with coffee and bread in a basket. The construction went very smoothly from spring to summer, thanks to exceptionally fine weather. The name of the cafe, "Piora," is a beautiful word that symbolizes the appearance of a hill that blooms all the season, thanks to the efforts of the family that has been with the land for a long time. The bakery has a simple brick finish, making it look like it had been there in the forest. We hoped that the shape of the bakery, which was lifted slightly from the ground, would give a feeling of coming out of the woods and entering the forest again. People will come for the green barley fields from winter to spring, and the corn fields in the summer, and the bakeries will be the background all season. And the smell of bread baked and brewed by this family will bring warmth to people's daily lives and to the green barley fields that remain green in the middle of winter.
