The Imprint
영종도에 위치한 파라다이스시티의 플라자호텔과 스파 씨메르 사이에 매우 독특한 외관의 건물 2동이 마주하고 있다. 광장을 마주한 두 건물은 창이 없으며, 골드빛과 연회색의 단순한 색상, 커다란 볼륨 덩어리로 먼저 인지되며, 마치 조각품인 듯 주변 건물의 입면을 양각 형태로 ‘imprint’한다. 또한 출입구 부분을 ‘lift’하면서 생긴 주름은 건물의 형태를 더욱 극적으로 만든다. 들어올려지며 드러나는 속살같은 스테인리스 미러 마감은 주변 풍경을 담기도 하고, 바닥의 led 조명과 함께 내부의 강렬한 성격을 드러내듯 환상적이고 몽환적인 분위기를 만든다.
하늘에서 보면 하나의 커다란 타원이 골드빛으로 올려진 건물은 클럽이며, 길게 휘어져 2개의 각기 다른 성격의 광장(Entertainment Square, Art Garden)을 분할하는 건물은 실내형 테마파크 ‘원더박스’이다.
‘Imprint’의 파사드는 비정형과 양각의 섬세한 디테일을 구현하기 위해 GFRC(유리섬유보강콘크리트) 패널로 제작됐다. 3D 모델링 파일을 이용하여 입면 형태를 거푸집으로 제작하고, 거기에 GFRC를 스프레이로 뿌려 25mm 두께의 입면을 만든다. 이때 외벽 구조면에 설치가 가능하도록 구조재를 부착하여 GFRC를 패널화하며, 최종 탈형을 통해 그 형태가 만들어지는 복잡한 공정을 거친다. 경제성과 시공성을 감안하여 평균 폭 약 2.2미터, 높이 약 3.6미터로 제안된 패널은 벽과 지붕까지 총 3,869개로 외피 면적이 약 9,500제곱미터이다. 일부 패널을 제외하고는 같은 모양이 거의 없어 엄청난 공사비가 투입되었는데, 작품을 만들겠다는 건축주의 의지가 없었다면 불가능한 일이었다.
한 가지 아쉬운 점은 연회색의 패널이 도장으로 마무리되어 GFRC 양각의 섬세함이 다소 떨어져 보인다는 점이다. 골드부분은 바닥, 벽, 지붕이 동일한 재료여야 한다는 전제, 제작 가능성, 사용성, 유지관리 등을 고려할 때 GFRC 패널에 골드 도장이 적절하겠다는 결론이었지만, 연회색의 패널은 GFRC에 안료를 넣어 패널 자체가 색을 내는 방식으로 설계에서는 제안됐다.
‘Imprint’는 네덜란드 건축그룹 MVRDV가 디자인 제안하고 간삼건축이 함께 설계한 건물이다. MVRDV의 제안은 늘 파격이었다. 간삼건축은 디자인을 최대한 고려하되 건축물의 사용성, 용도, 국내 법규, 실현 가능성 및 예산 등을 고려하여 MVRDV와 지속적인 협의를 통해 디자인을 조정해가며 설계를 진행했다. 또한, 한 동이 클럽이라는 것만 확실할 뿐 나머지 한 동은 용도가 불명확한 상태에서 설계가 진행됐다. 용도가 확실했던 클럽조차도 설계 도중 층수가 변경되는 어려움도 있었으며, 당시 ‘Sandbox’라고 불리었던 ‘원더박스’는 판매시설, 푸드코트, 페이크아트갤러리, 어린이 놀이시설을 거쳐 현재의 키즈&키덜트를 위한 실내형 테마파크로 최종 결정됐다. 여러 가지 어려움이 많은 설계였지만, 넘치는 창의적 아이디어를 가진 MVRDV와의 협업, 외장 컨설팅 및 다양한 분야의 전문가들과의 협업, 새로운 재료에 대한 탐색 등으로 또한 즐거운 도전의 과정이기도 했다.
Description of Project
Two buildings of very unique appearances are facing each other between the Plaza Hotel and Spa Cimer in the Paradise City located in Yeongjongdo. The two buildings, facing each other across the square, have no windows. At first glance, they are perceived as huge masses in simple colors: gold and light gray and the elevations of adjacent buildings are ‘imprinted’ in relief forms as if they were sculptures. The wrinkles created after lifting the doorway area make the form of the building more dramatic. The stainless steel mirror finish, like the skin revealed when a dress is lifted, contains the surrounding landscape and creates a fantastic and dreamy atmosphere that reveals the intense character of the interior together with the LED lights on the floor.
From the sky, the building with a large ellipse raised in gold light is the club and the building that divides the two distinctive squares (Entertainment Square, Art Garden) is the indoor theme park, 'Wonder Box'.
The elevation of the 'Imprint' is made of GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) panels to express the delicate details of atypical and embossed forms. The elevation is produced through a complicated process: the form of the elevation is created with a mold using a 3D modeling file, GFRC is sprayed on top of it to create a 25mm thick elevation, GFRC is panelized by mounting the structural member on it for its installation on the outer wall structure, and the form is finally completed through demolding. Considering cost and constructability, the panel was designed to be approximately 2.2m in width and 3.6m in height and a total of 3,869 panels were placed on walls and roofing, covering an area of 9,500m2. It took tremendous construction costs, as no panels were the same except for some, which would not have been possible without the owner's willingness to create a piece of art.
One thing to be desired is that the light gray panels are finished with coating, making them look less delicate. It was concluded that the gold coating would be appropriate for GFRC panels, considering the premise that the gold areas, including floors, walls, and roofs, should be of the same material, production capability, usability, and maintenance and management features. However, the light gray panels were designed to have their own color by mixing the pigment with GFRC.
The design of 'Imprint' was proposed by the Dutch architectural group MVRDV and implemented together with Gansam Architects & Partners. MVRDV's proposal has always been extraordinary. Gansam Architects & Partners implemented the design by adjusting it through continuous discussions with MVRDV by taking the usability of the building, its use, domestic regulations, feasibility, and budget into account while keeping the original design as much as possible. Also, the design was implemented while the use for one building was known – the club – and that for the other was uncertain. Even for the club, the one with a clear use, there were some difficulties such as changing the number of floors in the middle of design implementation. The use of the ‘Wonder Box’, which was called ‘Sandbox’ at the time, was decided to include sales facilities, food courts, a fake art gallery, and play facilities for children, which is now finally settled as an indoor theme park for children and adults. The implementation was a design that involved a few difficulties, but it was also an exciting process due to the collaboration with MVRDV, which has a lot of creative ideas, with external material suppliers and experts in various fields, and the exploration of new materials.
