‘효우당 사랑채’는 600년 역사를 지닌 경주 이천서씨 양경공파 국불천위 종가 안에 새로 조성된 독립형 한옥이다. 전통을 보존하는 데에 머무르지 않고, 다음 세대가 머물고 체험할 수 있도록 재해석해 ‘지속가능한 종가 문화의 장(場)’을 제안한다. 본채의 생활과 완전히 분리되지 않으면서도 숙박·휴식·종가 음식 체험 등 별도의 기능을 담아, 종가의 일상과 손님의 체류가 자연스럽게 겹쳐지도록 계획했다.
효우당은 예로부터 책장이 많았다. 책을 곁에 두고 살아온 종손은 이 공간을 마을을 위한 작은 도서관으로 꾸미려 했으나 여러 여건으로 뜻을 이루지 못했다. 그러나 책이 품은 지식과 기억, 책장을 둘러싼 생활의 풍경은 종가를 상징하는 이미지로 남았다. 새로운 사랑채는 ‘책’의 의미를 건축의 핵심 개념으로 삼아, 종가의 정신을 오늘의 공간 안에서 경험할 수 있는 장소로 만들어졌다.
이 한옥은 조선 후기 민화 ‘책가도’에서 영감을 받았다. 책가도는 책장, 서책, 문방기물 등을 입체적으로 표현한 그림으로, 서양의 선원근법을 도입해 전통과 현대가 공존하는 독특한 이미지를 형성한다. 이러한 시각적 원리를 건축적으로 해석하여, 효우당 사랑채는 마치 ‘비어 있는 책장’처럼 다양한 이야기를 담을 수 있는 여백과 켜를 설계의 중심에 두었다.
대지는 남측의 아파트와 정비되지 않은 인접 대지, 북동 측의 물안개·사당·본채 기와지붕과 자연 풍경이 대비되는 양면성을 지닌다. “아파트 뷰가 드러나지 않았으면 좋겠다”는 건축주의 요구에 따라 한옥의 전통적인 ‘ㄷ’ 자 배치를 변형, 한자의 ‘책(冊)’자를 닮은 양방향 대칭 구성으로 작은 대지 안에 남서·북동 두 마당을 마련했다. 마당의 크기와 방향을 조절해 좋은 풍경은 최대한 끌어들이고 피하고 싶은 시선은 자연스럽게 가리도록 하였다.
이 배치로 안과 밖의 여러 마당이 길게 이어지며, 크기가 다른 아담한 칸들이 연속적으로 펼쳐진다. 남측 마당을 지나 대청에 올라서면 시선은 점차 북동 측 풍경과 본채의 지붕으로 연결되고, 방문자는 마치 시간을 거슬러 과거의 마당으로 들어온 듯한 감각을 경험하게 된다. 전통과 현대, 일상과 체험이 섞여있는 이 동선은 방문자가 종가의 삶을 자연스럽게 느끼도록 이끈다.
실내에서는 한옥의 기본 단위인 ‘칸’을 현대적으로 변주했다. 겹겹이 포개진 칸과 사선으로 꺾인 벽의 켜를 통해 책가도의 시각적 원근감을 공간 속에 다시 구현하고자 했다. 익숙한 직각 구조 속에 낯선 사선이 더해지며 깊이감과 긴장감이 살아나고, 걸을수록 다른 시선과 장면이 펼쳐진다.
‘효우당 사랑채’는 종갓집을 단순히 보존하는 데서 나아가, 종가의 정신을 오늘의 건축 공간의 언어로 번역한 시도다. 건축가로서도 오래된 집안의 기억과 이야기를 현재의 삶에 이어 붙이는 작업이었기에, 과거와 현재, 기능과 상징, 정성과 편의가 교차하는 이 공간이 ‘머무는 동안, 종가의 시간이 스며드는 집’으로 오래 기억되기를 기대한다.

“HYOWUDANG SARANGCHAE” is a detached hanok newly built within the head-family estate of the Gyeongju Yi Cheon Seo clan (Yang-gyeong-gong branch), a lineage home with a 600 year history and an unbroken ancestral rite tradition. Rather than stopping at preservation, the project reinterprets tradition so the next generation can stay, learn, and experience it—proposing a “sustainable cultural ground” for the head-family house. Without fully separating from the everyday life of the main house, it accommodates distinct programs—overnight stay, rest, and headfamily food experiences—so daily routines and guests’ stay can overlap naturally.
HYOWUDANG was known for its many bookshelves. The head of the family, who lived closely with books, once hoped to turn this place into a small library for the village, but circumstances made it difficult. Still, the knowledge and memories held by books—and the domestic scenes around the shelves—remained as a symbolic image of the house. The new sarangchae takes “books” as its central architectural concept, creating a place where the spirit of the head-family home can be experienced through contemporary space.
This hanok draws inspiration from the late-Joseon folk painting Chaekgado (Books and Scholars’ Accoutrements). Chaekgado depicts bookshelves, volumes, and stationery objects in a threedimensional way, adopting Western linear perspective to form a unique image where tradition and modernity coexist. Interpreting this visual logic architecturally, HYOWUDANG SARANGCHAE places “layers” and “intentional emptiness”—like an “empty bookshelf” ready to hold many stories—at the heart of the design.
The site has two contrasting faces: to the south, an apartment building and an unrefined adjacent plot; to the northeast, a calm landscape of mist over water, a shrine, the tiled roof of the main house, and surrounding nature. Responding to the client’s request—“I don’t want the apartment view to be exposed”—the plan transforms the traditional “U-shaped (ㄷ)” courtyard layout into a bi-directional symmetrical composition resembling the Chinese character for “book” (冊). Within the compact site, this arrangement creates two courts—southwest and northeast—carefully tuning their size and orientation to draw in desirable views while naturally blocking unwanted sightlines.
With this layout, multiple inner and outer yards connect in a long sequence, and small, differently sized bays unfold one after another. Passing through the southern court and stepping up into the daecheong (main hall), the view gradually shifts toward the northeast scenery and the main house roofline. Visitors experience a sense of moving back in time, as if entering an older courtyard from the past. This circulation—where tradition and modernity, daily life and experience are intertwined—gently leads visitors to feel the life of the head-family home.
Inside, the hanok’s basic spatial unit, the kan (bay), is reworked in a contemporary way. Through overlapping bays and the layered depth created by diagonally folded walls, the project re-enacts the perspectival depth of Chaekgado in built space. Familiar right angles are interrupted by unexpected diagonals, producing depth and tension; the more one walks, the more new views and scenes appear.
HYOWUDANG SARANGCHAE is an attempt to move beyond simply preserving a head-family house, translating its spirit into the language of today’s architecture. For the architect, it was also a process of stitching an old family’s memories and stories into present-day life. It is hoped that this place—where past and present, function and symbol, care and comfort intersect—will be remembered as a house where, “as you stay, the time of the head-family home quietly seeps in.”
