Meditation of Four Color

 

 

 

 

 

두 부부를 위한 주말주택. 네 분이 머리를 맞대고 지은 집 이름 양평사색은 네 가지 색(四色)과 깊이 생각하며 이치를 따지는 사색(思索)을 의미한다. 사각의 떠 있는 매스와 숨겨진 사각의 중정들을 품고 있는, 이 집에 더할 나위 없이 어울리는 이름이다.
 
‘양평사색’의 건축은 이곳에서의 일상과 그에 필요한 모든 것들을 담는 그릇의 역할에 충실하기를 바랐다. 1층은 구획되지 않은 큰 공간으로, 주말에 지인들을 초대해 파티를 할 수 있는 공간이면서 건축주의 직업상 소품촬영 스튜디오로 쓸 수 있는 공간으로 계획됐다. 가구에 관심이 많은 건축주를 위해서도 건축은 배경이자 가구를 담는 그릇의 역할이 되도록 의도했다. 건축적 형태 역시 지극히 중성적이어서 스스로를 드러내거나 어떤 말을 걸어오지 않는다. 

1층의 투명한 유리상자 위에 솔리드한 박스가 올라타면서 남측 테라스는 4.5미터, 서측 정원으로는 1.8미터의 기둥 없는 캔틸레버 구조를 갖는다. 캔틸레버 아래 외부공간은 주택으로서는 다소 비일상적인 비율이나, 주말주택이자 파티룸을 위한 공간으로서 기능한다. 4.5미터의 캔틸레버는 2층의 벽체 전체가 보의 역할을 하면서 구조에 부담을 덜어주고, 이를 위해 단독주택으로서는 이색적으로 구조심의를 별도로 받게 된다. 

거실에서 마당을 바라보면 길게 내민 처마선과 기존의 보강토블록과 이격해 구조적 부담을 주지 않도록 만들어진 노출콘크리트 담장의 두 수평선 사이로 파노라마처럼 외부의 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 이 거실에 앉아 있으면 문득 풍경이 실내로 밀고 들어온다는 느낌을 만끽할 수 있다.

2층의 침실과 화장실들은 내밀한 박스 안에 비밀스런 중정들을 품고 있다. 2층까지 높은 천장으로 열린 현관은 캐주얼한 주말주택이었기에 과감하게 거실과 현관의 단차를 없앴다. 현관에서 곧바로 이어지는 계단을 통해 2층을 오를 때 3개의 중정들에 난 창을 통해 외부에서는 얼핏 폐쇄적으로 보이는 박스와는 달리 의외로 환한 햇빛과 녹음이 들어오는 풍성한 열림을 선사한다.

A weekend home for two couples, Yangpyeong Meditation, carries a thoughtfully chosen name that reflects its dual meaning: the four colors (四色) and the act of deep contemplation (思索) in pursuit of reason and understanding. With its floating rectangular mass and concealed courtyards, the name perfectly encapsulates the essence of this home.  

The architecture of Yangpyeong Meditation was designed to serve as a vessel that accommodates daily life and everything needed for it. The first floor features an open, unpartitioned space, envisioned as an area for hosting weekend gatherings with friends or functioning as a props photography studio, reflecting the homeowner’s profession. For the owner’s interest in furniture, the architecture was intentionally designed to act as both a background and a container for showcasing furniture. The architectural form is deliberately neutral, refraining from asserting itself or initiating a dialogue, allowing the focus to remain on the activities and objects within the space. 

A solid box rests atop the transparent glass structure of the first floor, creating a cantilever that extends 4.5 meters over the southern terrace and 1.8 meters toward the western garden, with no supporting columns. While this ratio is unconventional for a residential home, it serves the function of a weekend retreat and party space. The 4.5-meter cantilever is supported by the second-floor walls, which act as structural beams, reducing the load on the overall structure. To accommodate this unique feature, the design underwent a separate structural review, an uncommon step for a single-family home. 

From the living room, looking out toward the courtyard, the panorama of the exterior landscape unfolds between two horizontal lines: the extended eaves and the exposed concrete wall, carefully distanced from the existing reinforced earth blocks to avoid structural strain. Sitting in this living room, one can fully enjoy the sensation of the landscape flowing inward, as if the outdoors is pressing into the interior space. 

The bedrooms and bathrooms on the second floor are housed within intimate boxes that embrace secluded courtyards. The entrance, with its two-story-high ceiling, was designed without the typical level difference between the living room and entryway, reflecting the casual nature of this weekend home. As one ascends to the second floor via the staircase directly connected to the entrance, windows overlooking the three courtyards reveal a surprising openness. Contrary to the box’s seemingly closed exterior, abundant sunlight and greenery fill the space, creating a sense of vibrant openness.

두 가족을 위한 세컨하우스 <양평사색>은 두 부부가 머리를 맞대고 고심한 흔적이 함께 공유하는 하나의 집에서 네 가지 색깔(四色)로 고루 묻어나오도록 계획했다는데 의미가 있다. 물론 지친 일상을 달래며 사색(思索)할 수 있는 주말의 보금자리를 마련한다는 중의적 의미도 중요할 것이다. 특수구조로 별도의 구조심의를 받을 것을 감내하고 4.5미터를 내민 캔틸레버의 육중한 볼륨은, 지면과의 중력을 거스르며 과감하게 떠 있어 내·외부 공간의 경계를 흐린다. 거실에 앉아있으면 낮은 담과 처마선 사이의 파노라믹하게 펼쳐진 풍경이 마치 내부로 빨려 들어오는 느낌을 준다. 지극히 단순하고 중성적인 공간 구축을 통해, 건축이 자신의 말을 걸어오기보다는 배경이 되어 뒤로 물러나고, 삶의 이야기만이 스스로를 드러내고 기억으로 남겨진다. 자연의 열린 풍광과 녹음을 접할 수 있는 여느 공간과 달리, 닫혀있는 매스 안에 놓인 상부층의 개인적인 공간은 그 중심이 내부로 향하도록 내밀한 중정들을 품고 있어 사색의 여유를 제공한다.

Commentary
The second home, Yangpyeong Meditation, designed for two families, reflects the thoughtful collaboration between the two couples, creating a shared space that harmoniously expresses four distinct colors (四色). Additionally, it holds the dual meaning of providing a weekend retreat where they can escape the stresses of daily life and engage in reflection (思索). The massive 4.5-meter cantilever of Yangpyeong Meditation—built with a special structure that required additional structural review—boldly floats, defying gravity and blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. Sitting in the living room, one feels as though the panoramic view framed by the low wall and eaves is being drawn inside. Through the creation of an extremely simple and neutral space, the architecture recedes into the background, allowing life’s stories to naturally unfold, leaving lasting memories without the building imposing itself. Unlike typical spaces that offer open views and access to greenery, the upper-level private spaces within the enclosed mass of Yangpyeong Meditation are oriented inward, embracing intimate courtyards at their center. These secluded courtyards provide a tranquil setting conducive to quiet reflection.
