의뢰
우리를 찾아온 건축주 부부는 곧 태어날 아이와 부모님과 함께 3대가 어울려 살 수 있는 집을 꿈꾸고 있었다. 그리고 사옥으로 사용할 공간도 필요하다고 했다. 대지 면적이 주택을 짓기에 작은 편은 아니었지만, 건폐율 20%인 자연녹지지역에 해당하는 땅이라, 부모 세대와 자녀 세대 각각의 생활공간과 사옥으로 사용할 공간의 요구를 넉넉히 수용하기에는 만만치 않은 조건이었다. 

맥락
부지의 서·북측은 논과 밭이 인접해 있고, 남·동측은 복합판넬 형식의 공장과 창고 등이 배치되어 있어서, 전원에 위치하긴 했으나 좋은 풍경을 가진 전원주택부지는 아니었다. 특히나 남측의 창고 건물은 남쪽으로 열린 배치를 하기에 악조건이었다. 다행히 원경에는 고장산, 영축산 등의 수려한 산세가 병풍처럼 펼쳐져 있었다.

두 개의 마당
건폐율 20%란 조건은 반대로 80%의 외부공간을 갖는다는 것을 의미한다. 탄탄가의 외부공간은 ‘T’자형의 건물 배치로 인해 크게 사옥의 마당과 주택의 마당으로 나누어진다. 외부인들의 접근이 잦은 사무동의 마당은 도로 쪽에 인접해 있다. 주거동의 마당은 T자의 가운데 건축물로 인해 주거생활의 프라이버시가 보호된다. 각각의 마당은 프로그램에 따라 다르게 작동하도록 조성되어 있다.

골칫거리인 남측의 창고는 높은 가벽으로 가리고, 논밭과 영축산이 보이는 서측은 낮은 담장으로 경계는 구분하되 충분히 열어 전원의 풍경을 담아낼 수 있도록 했다. 그로 인해 ‘우리 집’ 만의 안락하고 쾌적한 마당이 생겨났다. 그 마당을 ‘ㄱ’자로 위요한 건물은 각각 부모님 세대와 자녀 세대가 분리되어 각자의 사생활을 보장받는다. 두 세대가 만나는 중심에는 주방과 식탁이 있다. 그곳에서 삼대가 끼니를 같이 한다. 첫 미팅 때 뱃속에 있던 탄탄이는 이제 마당을 뛰어다니고, 할머니와 주방에서 유치원에서 있었던 일을 이야기하며, 엄마 아빠와 손을 잡고 다락 놀이방으로 간다.

Request
The couple who approached us dreamed of a house where three generations—parents, themselves, and their soon-to-be-born child—could live together harmoniously. Additionally, they needed a space to use as an office. Although the site was not small for building a house, it was located in a natural green area with a building coverage ratio of 20%, making it challenging to accommodate the living spaces for both generations and the office space.

Context
The west and north sides of the site are adjacent to fields and farmland, while the south and east sides are occupied by factory and warehouse buildings made of composite panels. Therefore, although the site is located in a rural area, it does not boast the scenic views typically associated with countryside residences. Particularly, the warehouse building on the south side posed a significant obstacle for creating an open southern layout. Fortunately, the distant views included beautiful mountain ranges like Gojangsan and Yeongchuksan, offering a picturesque backdrop.

Two Courtyards
A 20% building coverage ratio means that 80% of the site must remain as open space. The exterior spaces of the house, designed with a ‘T’-shaped building layout, are divided into two main courtyards: one for the office and one for the residence. The courtyard for the office, frequently accessed by visitors, is positioned adjacent to the road. The residential courtyard, protected by the central building of the ‘T’ shape, ensures the privacy of the living spaces. Each courtyard is designed to function differently according to its intended use.

Family
The problematic warehouse on the south side is concealed by a tall wall, while the western side, with views of the fields and Yeongchuksan, is bordered by a low fence to delineate the boundary while allowing the rural scenery to be fully appreciated. This design created a cozy and pleasant courtyard unique to this home. The building, shaped like a ‘ㄱ’, ensures that the parents’ and children’s living areas are separated to maintain privacy for both generations. The central area where the two generations meet is the kitchen and dining area, where the three generations share meals together. The child, who was still in the womb during the first meeting, now runs around the courtyard, chats with the grandmother about kindergarten in the kitchen, and holds hands with the parents to play in the attic playroom.
