Chuncheon Farmers Market

 

 

 

춘천 지역먹거리 직매장은 설계공모로 시작된 프로젝트이다. 공모에서 목구조를 요구한 것은 아니었으나 평소 공공건축에 현대식 목구조가 적용되어야 한다는 생각이 있었고 ‘먹거리 직매장’이라는 쓰임과도 적합하다 판단하여 목구조건축물을 제안하게 되었다.

소프트웨어 + 하드웨어
여러 공공 프로젝트를 진행하며 아쉬웠던 부분 중 하나가 형식은 공공건축이나 결과적으로 ‘주인 없는 건물’이 되는 경우이다. 설계자가 이러한 문제의 근본을 해결할 수는 없겠지만 차선책으로 설계 초기부터 운영자와의 협의를 요청했고, 공사감독관들의 협조로 운영자와의 만남이 여러 차례 이루어져 실제로 필요한 기능과 공간구성을 함께 논의하면서 건축물의 완성도를 높일 수 있었다.

건축계획 
소규모 단층 주택이 대부분인 대상지의 주변 풍경을 해치거나 위압감을 주지 않도록 단층으로 구성하고, 지붕의 높낮이에 변화를 주어 가능한 작은 덩어리의 조합으로 보이도록 했다. 이렇게 나뉜 세 영역은 각각 카페, 판매장, 옥외데크로 구성했다. 특히 중앙에 위치한 옥외데크는 지붕이 덮인 반외부공간으로, 각 프로그램으로 진입하는 버퍼스페이스 역할을 하는 동시에 간헐적 행사 시에 실내공간과 연계해 다양한 프로그램을 담아낼 수 있도록 했다.

구조계획
이 건축물의 지붕은 평범한 박공형태이나 보편적으로 쓰이는 서까래 방식이 아닌 벌집구조와 같은 다이어그리드(diagrid: waffle) 구조를 적용했다. 형상뿐 아니라 실제로 다이어프램(diaphragm)으로 작동하도록 현장집성을 병행하는 새로운 구조적 방법을 제안했다. 건축물 전체의 지붕은 덮개합판이 구조적인 역할을 하지 않고 와플 형상의 글루램만으로 구조적인 역할을 할 수 있도록 디자인되었다.

공사과정
새로운 구조방식의 시도에는 협업 구조기술사의 역량이 가장 큰 역할을 했으며, 시공자의 축적된 시공 노하우도 한몫했다. 설계단계뿐 아니라 시공단계에서도 설계자와 구조기술사가 발생 가능한 문제들에 대해 끊임없이 검토했고, 공사 마지막 단계까지 관여했다.

The project for the Chuncheon Local Food Market started as a design competition. Although the competition did not specifically require a wooden structure, the decision to use timber was made to align with the eco-friendly image of the "Local Food Market" and to practice carbon reduction in public architecture.

Software + Hardware
One of the challenges encountered in previous public projects was that, in the end, these buildings often became "ownerless structures" despite their initial design. While it may not be possible for architects to fundamentally solve this issue, the approach taken was to request early collaboration with the operator during the design phase. With active cooperation from construction supervisors, several meetings were held with the operator to collectively discuss and refine the necessary functions and spatial configurations. This collaboration helped elevate the overall quality and functionality of the building.

Architectural Planning
To ensure that the single-story structure would not disrupt the surrounding landscape, which primarily consists of small single-story houses, the design aimed to minimize visual impact. This was achieved by creating variations in the height of the roof, resulting in a composition that appears as small individual blocks. The building was divided into three areas: a café, a sales area, and an outdoor deck. The central outdoor deck, situated beneath a roof, serves as a buffer space for entry to each program and can also be used in conjunction with the indoor space for various events.

Structural Planning
While the roof of the building has a conventional post-and-beam structure, it deviates from typical methods and employs a waffle-like diagrid structure instead of the commonly used truss system. This innovative approach not only shapes the roof but also functions as a diaphragm, providing structural stability to the entire building. It is designed to rely solely on the waffle-shaped glulam members without the need for additional covering panels for structural purposes.

Construction
The attempt to introduce a new structural method heavily relied on the collaborative expertise of structural engineers, and the accumulated construction know-how of the construction team played a significant role as well. Both during the design and construction phases, architects and structural engineers constantly reviewed potential issues and challenges. They were actively involved in addressing any problems that arose, ensuring their input extended to the final stages of construction.
