LG아트센터 설계·감리 총괄 맡은 ‘간삼건축’
안도 다다오의 디자인 설계로 구현

Design Concept
① 공원과 광장으로 열린 공간, ② 예술과 과학의 공존→시너지 효과, ③ 튜브→공원·예술·과학의 융합, ④ 창작의 계곡→다양한 프로그램의 연계

 

이 건물은 정비 중인 마곡 공원 핵심 시설의 하나로, LG아트센터와 LG사이언스홀 두 가지 시설로 구성돼 있다. 두 시설을 주변의 흐름과 환경에 배려하며 균형 있게 배치하고, 전체적으로 심플하고 단정하게 하여 랜드마크가 될 수 있는 형태를 목표로 했다.
건물은 약 100미터×100미터의 정방형 평면 형상을 기본으로 하고 있으며, 그 대각선 축이 남북과 동서 방향이다. 동측으로 LG아트센터, 서측으로 LG사이언스홀이 배치되었다. LG아트센터는 사방으로 열려 있는 공원 초입에 위치하고, 마곡나루 역과 연결되어 관객 동선 정리가 필요했다. 전면에 배치된 스텝 아트리움(Step Atrium)과 관통되는 튜브가 만나 자연스럽게 관객들의 동선이 분리된다. 메인 홀과 블랙박스를 병치시켜 관객과 아티스트와의 동선을 분리시켰다. 
또한, 관객과의 거리를 최소화하고 음향 투과형 재료를 사용한 것도 특징이다. 내장 전면을 목조 마무리로 덮어 객석 전체가 마치 하나의 악기와 같은 형상으로 보이는 것을 의도했다. 내부에 설치되는 조명장비 등의 주변에는 음향 투과형 재료를 활용하였다. 무대 위 배우와 관객석에 있는 관객의 거리를 가능한 가깝게 해 최대 가시거리를 최소화하여 공연의 몰입도를 최상으로 끌어올렸다. 최상의 사이트라인을 형성하기 위해 끝 열의 열 간격은 900밀리미터, 좌석 사이 간격은 520~550밀리미터로 하고, VIP열은 1,000밀리미터 간격과 550~580밀리미터의 좌석 폭으로 확장된 배치를 하였다.
건물의 내부 공간은 세 가지 주요 요소로 이루어져 있으며, 그 요소는 지하철 연결통로에서 이어지는 그랜드 스테어 아트리움(Grand Stair Atrium), 대지레벨에서 남북으로 건물을 관통하는 튜브, 그리고 경사면으로 이루어진 3개 층을 아우르는 원호의 형상이 한 벽으로 구성된다.

Main Concept 
건축에 자연이 녹아들도록 설계하는 안도 다다오의 건축 철학이 고스란히 반영된 LG아트센터 서울은 튜브(TUBE), 스텝 아트리움(STEP ATRIUM), 게이트 아크(GATE ARC)라는 세 가지 콘셉트를 바탕으로 설계되었다.
‘스텝 아트리움’은 지하철 마곡나루역에서부터 LG아트센터 서울 지상 3층까지 연결하는 계단으로 이루어진 공간이다. 이를 통해 방문객들은 메인 로비와 객석으로 쉽게 접근할 수 있다. 튜브가 지상 공간을 횡으로 연결한다면, 스텝아트리움은 지하부터 지상까지를 종으로 연결하는 셈이다. 
‘게이트 아크’는 관객들이 로비에서 마주하게 되는 곡선 형태로 이루어진 벽면으로, 역동적이고 통일감 있는 외관을 형성하여, 각 공연장에 관객을 초대하는 상징적인 문(Gate)의 역할을 한다.
‘튜브(Tube)’는 LG아트센터 서울의 지상층을 대각선으로 관통하는 원형 통로이다. 높이 10미터에 달하는 튜브를 사이에 두고 동편에는 공연장과 리허설룸, 교육시설이, 서편에는 ‘LG디스커버리랩’이 위치한다. 공원과 광장으로 연결되는 튜브는 지상의 관객들을 건물 내부로 끌어들이며 LG아트센터 서울이 예술, 과학, 자연의 융합 공간임을 상징적으로 보여준다.

건축 특징
이외 주요 공간으로 LG Signature홀, U+ 스테이지, 아트라운지, 리허설룸, 스튜디오/클래스룸 등이 있다. LG Signature 홀은 오케스트라부터 오페라, 뮤지컬, 연극, 발레, 콘서트까지 공연할 수 있는 1,335석 규모의 다목적 공연장이다. 직사각형 프로시니엄 형태로 가로 12미터에서 20미터까지, 높이는 8미터에서 12미터까지 변화가 가능하다. 소리가 반사되는 잔향 시간을 1.2초에서 1.85초까지 조정하여 장르에 따라 적합한 음향 환경을 조성할 수 있다. 발코니 좌석은 무대를 감싸듯 곡선으로 만들어졌다. 특히 역삼동 LG아트센터에 국내 최초로 도입됐던 건축구조분리공법(Box in Box)을 홀 전체에 반영해 지하철뿐 아니라 헬리콥터 및 항공기 소음까지 완벽히 차단시켰다.
2개 층 365석 규모의 U+ Stage는 공연 성격에 따라 좌석 배치를 자유자재로 변경할 수 있는 가변형 극장이다. 객석이 무대 정면을 바라보는 프로시니엄 구조는 물론, 무대를 중앙에 두고 양쪽 객석을 마주 보는 구조, 객석이 무대를 둥글게 감싸는 아레나 구조 등으로 아티스트의 의도에 따라 유연하게 무대와 객석을 조합할 수 있다. 이중벽체구조가 적용되어 소음을 차단시켰으며, 연극, 무용, 재즈 등 다양한 형태의 공연은 물론, 콘퍼런스도 진행이 가능하다.
무대와 객석을 포함하고 있는 큰 박스 안에서 객석, 무대의 공간을 필요에 따라 자유롭게 변형(축소/확장)하여 이용이 가능하다. 공연장의 내부는 End stage, Thrust stage, Long thrust stage, Travers configuration stage, in-the-round(arena) stage 등의 형태로 바꾸어 사용할 수 있다. 블랙박스 시어터(Black Box Theater, 공연장 내부 전면이 까맣게 칠해져 있는 육면체의 박스처럼 보인다는 데에서 유래)를 적용해 오케스트라, 재즈, 연극, 현대무용, 콘퍼런스 등을 할 수 있도록 했다. 각각의 무대 활용도에 따라서 잔향시간은 1.02~1.36초의 가변성을 갖는다. 다른 공연장들과 달리 여기서는 관객과 아티스트의 동선을 연출자의 의도에 따라 분리, 교차할 수도 있으며, 공간 내 어디든 무대가 되고 객석이 될 수 있도록 세팅되었다. 객석은 다양한 형태로 조합이 가능하도록 모듈화했고, 필요에 따라 이동-설치-제거할 수 있도록 하부에는 수납공간을 두었다. 조명 및 무대장치의 가변성을 극대화하기 위해 텐션 와이어 그리드(Tension Wire Grid)를 설치했다. 
아트라운지는 LG아트센터 서울 2층에 위치한 소규모 전시 및 라운지 공간으로 천창을 내어 빛을 내부로 끌어들이고, 튜브의 노출 콘크리트 외벽을 만나볼 수 있다. 또 오케스트라 및 뮤지컬, 오페라 연습까지 가능한 대형 리허설룸과 연극/무용 연습에 적합한 소형 리허설룸을 구비하여 각 리허설룸의 음향적인 기능을 만족시키면서, 심플한 인테리어로 계획하였다.​

설계 전략
건축음향의 경우 음향의 확산, 흡음, 반사 등의 기술적 요구를 충족하는 형태와 재료가 요구된다. 이러한 요구를 선험적으로 인지해 공연장 기술 구현과 디자인을 동시에 충족시켰다. 기술력과 경험을 제대로 갖춘 팀을 알고, 같이 할 수 있는 것 역시 공연장을 설계하는 건축사의 능력이다. 건축주와 협의 후 세계적인 컨설턴트 팀들과 접촉해 LG아트센터 작품 완성을 위한 적합한 팀을 선정, 협업으로 완성도를 높였다.

Design Concept

This building is one of the key facilities of Magok Park under redevelopment and consists of two facilities, LG Arts Center and LG Science Hall. This project aimed at placing the two facilities in a balanced way, considering the surrounding flow and environment, so that it can be a landmark as it is designed to be simple and tidy overall.
Basically, the building has a square-floor space of about 100 meters by 100 meters, and its diagonal axis is north-to-south and east-to-west. LG Arts Center is located to the east and LG Science Hall to the west. LG Arts Center is located at the entrance of the park which is open in all directions, and it is connected to Magongnaru Station, so it was necessary to organize the movement flow of the audience. Step Atrium placed in the front and the penetrating Tube are connected to naturally separate the movement flow of the audiences. By juxtaposing the main hall and the black box, the movement flow of audiences and artists is separated.
In addition, it is characterized by minimizing the distance from the audience and using sound transmission materials. The front of the interior is covered with a wooden finish to make the entire audience look like a musical instrument. Sound transmission materials were used around the lighting equipment installed in the building. The viewing distance was minimized by making the distance between the actors on the stage and the audience in the seats as close as possible to maximize to increase the immersion level of the performance. In order to form the best sightline, the gap gap between the final seat in the row is 900mm, the space between seats is 520 to 550mm, and the VIP seating rows are arranged to allow for expansion with the space of 1,000mm and the seat width of 550 to 580mm.
The interior space of the building consists of three main elements: Grand Stair Atrium leading from the subway passage, TUBE running through the building from north to south on the site level, and a circular arc of three inclined floors form one wall.

Main Concept 
The design of the LG Arts Center fully reflects the architectural philosophy of Tadao Ando, which is to let nature blend into the architecture. The design is based on three concepts: TUBE, STEP ATRIUM, and GATE ARC. ‘STEP ATRIUM’ is a space consisting of staircases that connects Magongnaru subway station to the third floor of the LG Arts Center. This allows visitors convenient access to the main lobby and the auditorium. The TUBE connects the ground space horizontally, and the STEP ATRIUM connects the underground area and the upper levels vertically. ‘GATE ARC’ is a curvilinear wall that the audience faces in the lobby. It creates a dynamic and unified facade for the space, serving the symbolic role of a gate that invites audiences to each performance hall.

Architecture Features
Other major spaces include LG SIGNATURE Hall, U+ Stage, Art Lounge, Rehearsal Rooms, and Classrooms/Studio. LG SIGNATURE Hall is a multi-purpose performance hall with 1,335 seats, which can host a full orchestra, operas, musicals, concerts, theatre, and ballet performances. A rectangular proscenium theatre, its width can range from 12m to 20m, and its height from 8m to 12m. Its reverberation time can be adjusted from 1.2s to 1.85s, enabling a suitable acoustic setting for different genres. Balconies are set up in a curved shape as if embracing the stage. Of particular note is the “Box in Box” method that was adopted by the former LG Arts Center in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul for the first time in Korea, and which is now applied throughout LG SIGNATURE Hall, blocking out all noise not only from subway trains but also from airplanes and helicopters.
With 365 seats on two levels, U+ Stage is a transformable theatre with flexible seating arrangements to suit the type of performance it is holding. The stage and auditorium can be arranged in several ways to meet the artists’ intentions from a proscenium structure where the audience directly faces the stage to having two sets of seats facing each other with the stage in the middle, or an arena structure where the audience surrounds the stage in a circle. U+ Stage has double walls which effectively block all noise from outside and can host events for a wide 
Inside the large box that includes the stage and seats, it is possible to freely transform (reduce/expand) the space of the seats and the stage as needed. The inside of the performance hall can be changed and used in the form of End stage, Thrust Stage, Long Thrust Stage, Travers Configuration Stage, and In-the-round (arena) Stage. By applying the Black Box Theater (derived from the shape that looks like a hexagon where the inside of the hall is all black), it is intended to hold orchestra, jazz, theater, modern dance, and conferences. The reverberation time varies from 1.02 to 1.36 seconds depending on the use of each stage. Unlike other performance halls, the movement flow of the audience and the artists can be separated or crossed according to the director's intentions, and it can be the stage and auditorium anywhere in the space. The seats are modularized so that they can be combined in various forms, with a storage space at the bottom which can be moved, installed, and removed as needed. Tension Wire Grid was also installed to maximize the variability of lighting and stage setting.
Located on the 2nd floor of the LG Arts Center Seoul, the Art Lounge is a small exhibition and lounge space with a skylight to bring in light to the inside, where you can see the exposed concrete outer wall of Tube. In addition, it is designed to have not only large rehearsal rooms for orchestras, musicals, and operas, but also small rehearsal rooms for theater/dance, while its interior is simple yet satisfying the acoustic function of rehearsal rooms.

Design Strategy
Architectural acoustics require the shapes and materials that meet the technical requirements of acoustic diffusion, absorption and reflection. Recognizing these needs intuitively, both technology and design of performance halls are satisfied at the same time. Knowing and being able to work with a team that has technology and experience is also the ability of the architect who designs performance halls. After consulting with the client, we contacted world-class consultant teams to select a suitable team to complete the artwork, LG Arts Center, and eventually we could improve the level of completion through collaboration.
