부산의 대표적인 산만디(산꼭대기를 일컫는 부산 사투리) 동네인 전포동은 산복도로에 면해 제멋대로 구획된 작은 필지 위에 집이 빼곡하게 들어서 있다. 그 사이에서 엄지손가락을 척하니 들어 올린 것 같은 모양으로 존재감을 드러내는 건물이 엄지척 하우스다. 

건축주는 43제곱미터의 대지에 가능한 최대로 건축하길 원했다.
건폐율 60%(24제곱미터) 안에 일조사선을 고려하여 계획하다 보니 자연스레 엄지손가락을 든 형태가 만들어졌다. 사선제한이 없는 지면에서 9미터까지는 3미터씩 3개 층으로 나누었고, 절반 이상이 사선으로 잘려나가야 하는 4층은 좁은 면적을 보완하기 위해 사선모양을 유지한 채 높은 천장고로 계획했다.
 
가장 큰 고민은 계단이었다. 계단이 차지하는 면적과 부피를 줄이기 위해 금속판의 원형 계단을 제작했다. 반지름 90센티미터 너비는 양손으로 짐을 들고 오르내릴 수 있는 최소 폭이었고, 계단 남쪽면의 창으로 들어오는 빛과 은행나무 한그루의 풍경은 돌음계단의 지루함을 보상하기에 충분하다.
 
주변의 주택을 배려하여 창의 위치와 크기를 계획했다. 
1층의 삼면은 미닫이 창호로 때때로 열고 닫으면서 사용자의 의지에 따라 건물을 확장해서 사용할 수 있다. 
 
3, 4층은 복층형 원룸이다. 주 생활 공간인 3층은 마주한 건물을 피해서 가장자리에 창을 두었는데 해 질 녘 노을 진 하늘과 내려다보이는 시가지의 풍경을 경험할 수 있다. 사선제한으로 줄어든 4층은 옥상 테라스로 나가는 동선이자 침실로 사용된다. 
 
옥상은 후면의 아파트 주차장 옹벽 위로 빼꼼히 솟아 올라와 있다. 아파트 1층과 마주하고 있는 옥상에는 묘한 긴장감이 느껴지기도 하지만, 한눈에 내려다보이는 야경은 건물의 크기를 잊게 한다.
 
같은 면에 맞춰 마감된 타일과 유리는 건물의 단순한 형태를 더욱 완전하게 보이게 하고, 자투리 없이 딱 맞아떨어지는 타일 마감에서 작지만 완성도 높은 건물을 위한 시공자의 노고가 느껴진다. 
 
자동차가 들어서면 꽉 찰 정도의 작은 건물이 지어지기 위해 빈 땅에 1대1로 그려가며 익숙치 않은 치수를 정해나갔고, 현장에서는 두세 사람이 겨우 들어갈 수 있는 비좁은 공간에서 치열하게 만들어가는 과정이 녹록하지만은 않았지만 개발의 바람에서 빗겨서 있는 작은 땅에 의미 있는 가능성을 보여줄 수 있길 기대한다.

Jeonpo-dong, Busan's representative Sanmandi (the Busan dialect referring to mountaintop), is full of houses on a randomly divided small parcel while facing Sanbok Road. In the meantime, there is a building, 'Eomjichuck House,' that looks like 'thumps-up 'with a strong impression.
The client wanted to make it big as much as possible on a 43㎡ site. The shape had emerged as we planned it, considering regulatory limiting lines for daylight within 60% of the building coverage ratio (24㎡). Up to 9 meters from the ground, where there is no architectural slant line limit, it was divided into three floors of 3 meters each. As for the 4th floor, whose more than half should be cut diagonally, a high ceiling is designed while maintaining the diagonal shape to make up for the narrow area.
The biggest concern was the stairs. A circular staircase of metal plate made the stair's area and volume reduced. The width of 90cm in radius was the minimum width for carrying luggage with both hands, and the light through the window on the southern stairs and the scenery of a ginkgo tree is enough to relieve the boredom of the winding stair.  
We designed the position and the size of the windows after careful consideration of the surrounding houses. The three sides of the first floor have sliding windows to be open and closed, allowing them to expand the building.
The 3rd and 4th floors are duplex studios. The third floor, which is the main living space, has a window at the corner of the building, avoiding a neighboring building that faces the building so that the user can see the sunset in the sky and the city's view. The daylight regulation made the 4th-floor area small and allowed the level to have a passageway to the rooftop terrace and a bedroom. 
The rooftop rises above the retaining wall of the apartment parking lot in the rear. On the rooftop facing the first floor of the apartment, there's an odd feeling of tension, but the night view overlooking the apartment makes you forget the building's size. 
Tile and glass finish done on the same side make the simple form of the building look complete. Furthermore, a tile finish that fits perfectly without scraps shows the constructor’s effort to build a small but high-quality building.
To build a small building narrow enough to be packed with a car, we measured the unfamiliar dimensions by making a one-to-one drawing on the empty land. It was pretty hard to design the building in this cramped space where only two or three people can enter the construction site, but we hope it will show significant potential in the small site behind the development trend.
